Why It Is So Important to Have a Work-Life Balance

The term “work-life balance” was made popular by those categorized as Generation X— a generational workforce that puts emphasis on success in the workplace but also having ample time for the caregiving of loved ones. You may actually hear the younger generations push for a work-life balance more so than let’s say, the Baby Boomers.

In fact, “Boomers” are said to stay at companies longer than other generations, leading to more stress and responsibility within the workplace and a decreasing work-life balance. It wasn’t until Generation X paved the way for future generations to push for flexible schedules that work-life balance became a priority for those in the workforce.

What does a work-life balance look like?

A work-life balance can look different for everyone, but having a flexible work environment is one of the best ways to satisfy this balance.

According to Forbes, a work-life balance is shown to decrease levels of stress and increase levels of job satisfaction and employee productivity.

A work-life balance can mean prioritizing what is important to you outside of the workplace and letting go of the idea you have to do and have it all. To maintain a healthy balance, you must set and maintain firm boundaries. When implementing this balance, employees will likely experience fewer health problems, less burnout and more mindfulness.

What are the impacts of not having a work-life balance?

Not having a healthy balance between work and life outside of your career can have negative impacts such as stress, burnout, and health issues. According to Harvard Business Review, the psychological and physical problems of burned-out employees cost an estimated $125 billion to $190 billion a year in health care spending in the United States.

Employers can actually save money by implementing flexibility in the workplace for their employees.

It is true, however, that some may take advantage of their work-life balance; this is why it is important to still monitor employees and track their progress on daily tasks.
