A Day in the Life of an SEO Intern

Before interning at 898 Marketing, I never imagined that I would be able to develop such a deep and professional understanding of search engine optimization. In college, my professors provided me with a basic foundation of SEO, but they did not prepare me for the fast paced and exciting work environment that this field creates. If you are nervous about starting a marketing internship, you are not alone! In this blog, I will share my experience and key takeaways that will help you approach your first day of interning with confidence and ease.

Morning Office Madness

My workday starts at 9 a.m., always with a coffee and water in hand. As I walk into the office, I am greeted by the friendly smiles of my coworkers. Once I sit down at my desk, I open my email and check what I have missed from my days away from the office. This encourages me to view my outstanding tasks and get a clear picture of what I need to accomplish that day.

Every morning I meet with our SEO Specialist, Sarah, for a quick check-in to prioritize tasks for the day and to catch up on our lives outside of work. These meetings set an exciting tone for the day as we discuss all of our goals!

As an SEO Intern, my morning is filled with a variety of tasks that contribute to optimizing our partners’ search engines. You will often find me working on Google Business profile updates, doing keyword research or fine-tuning metadata to improve search visibility. When I am not working individually on a task, I attend internal and partner meetings where I observe Sarah as she discusses our SEO strategies and performance with our partners.

Lunch at the Office

Lunch is a perfect time to network, connect and build relationships with my coworkers. Whether I choose to stay in the office and eat a packed lunch or to go out with coworkers to try a local restaurant, this break in the day is a much-needed refresh to get ready for an afternoon of hard work.

One of my favorite aspects of lunch at the 898 Marketing office is that we use the time to celebrate any employee birthdays. The honored employee gets to pick the lunch spot and dessert. It is a great tradition that builds community and a positive office culture.

Afternoon Office Adventures

Afternoons are when I truly get to immerse myself in SEO projects and envision a future career in the field. Typically, this is when I can reflect on things I have learned from Sarah and what I have studied and apply it to real-world examples. I love being able to complete a project from start to finish that proves the hard work of a college degree will pay off.

A lot of my afternoon time is dedicated to website refreshes. I analyze webpages and then track areas where the website can improve. I make updates based on my analysis and current market trends. These improvements help the website aesthetically but also improve the user experience on each page. The majority of my time is spent in WordPress optimizing webpages with tasks such as updating content, adding internal links and more to increase our partner’s visibility and engagement on their site.

End of the Day as An SEO Intern

As the day winds down, I always take a moment to reflect on my workday and the skills I have developed. Every single day at 898 Marketing, I learn something new or refine a pre-existing skill. This education is what makes the internship experience so invaluable. The wealth of knowledge passed down from current employees has been instrumental to my personal growth as a professional.

I started this internship as a nervous college student with a very basic understanding of search engine optimization. I can confidently say that when this internship comes to an end, I will have a deep and hands-on knowledge of SEO. This internship has given me the confidence and skills to enter the professional world.
