#89Ate – Cockeye Barbecue

We’ve brought up our appreciation of American barbecue in past 89Ate reviews, most notably our Barry Dyngles review. Zach’s affinity for meat smokers, Bill’s appreciation for the cuisine, and our team’s desire to try each barbecue restaurant from the area has led us to Cockeye Barbecue in Warren. A fast-casual restaurant, Cockeye has become famous in the area for its traditional American barbecue, served with a variety of tasty sides and sauces, veggies, and their signature hush puppies. In our opinion, Cockeye makes barbecue good enough to rival any other barbecue restaurant in the country. Here’s what we loved most about it!

Located in Warren, Cockeye specializes in serving southern-style American barbecue. They use fresh, locally sourced meats and ingredients for their food, and utilize the “low and slow” smoking process for their meats. This process, in conjunction with their signature rubs and sauces, and a casual atmosphere in the restaurant, creates a one-of-a-kind barbecue experience in the Mahoning Valley. Owner and pitmaster Erik Hoover has created a space for people to relax and have an enjoyable barbecue experience that can’t be replicated.

For our Cockeye lunch, our team ordered a platter piled high with pulled pork, pulled chicken, brisket, macaroni and cheese, cheesy potatoes, hush puppies, coleslaw, and four different sauces. While each cut of meat was delicious, our team especially enjoyed the pulled pork with traditional sweet barbecue sauce. The cheesy potatoes were also a favorite, as they were cooked perfectly and covered in delicious melted cheese. One of the major highlights was ice cream from Ccokeye’s ice cream shop, Cockeye Creamery. The homemade ice cream was a wonderful dessert to our barbecue meal.

Cockeye Barbecue brings the traditional southern barbecue experience to Warren, offering a number of tasty smoked meats, sides, and ice cream. The next time you’re in the mood for some barbecue, or just want an ice cream cone on a hot summer day, head over to Cockeye. Be sure to share and let us know about your Cockeye experience using #89Ate!
